Getting your flu shot early, understanding your OSHC cover and knowing where to go can save you time, money and a lot of misery.

I’ve helped thousands of students navigate OSHC as an education agent, and the same questions come up year after year. Here’s what you need to know for the 2026 flu season.

Flu Season by City: When You’re Most at Risk

Nationally, flu season runs May through October, with a sharp peak in July and August. But depending on where you’re studying, the timing shifts.

• Sydney — Cases start climbing in late May, peak between mid-July and early August. University of Sydney and UNSW health services usually run vaccination clinics from late April.
• Melbourne — Colder temperatures push the peak slightly later, often late July through August. Monash Clayton and University of Melbourne Parkville campus health services can get slammed with flu cases in weeks 2–4 of semester 2.
• Brisbane — The subtropical winter kicks in earlier. We typically see a peak in June–July. QUT and UQ St Lucia free flu shot programs open in April.
• Adelaide, Perth and Hobart — All follow the national July–August peak, with Adelaide and Hobart sometimes seeing a second small wave in September.

Plan your vaccination for at least mid-April to mid-May. It takes about two weeks for your body to build immunity, so a mid-May shot means you’re protected for the worst of it.

Does My OSHC Cover the Flu Shot?

This is the number one question we field. The short answer: it depends on your insurer, the type of cover you have and where you get the shot.

All OSHC policies cover the GP consultation if you see a doctor for flu symptoms or a vaccination appointment. However, basic (minimum) OSHC does not cover the cost of the vaccine itself when administered at a pharmacy, and it rarely covers it at a GP unless your insurer has added a prevention benefit through its extras add-on. If you’ve taken out a higher-tier OSHC with extras — Bupa’s OSH Extras, Medibank’s Essential Extras, nib’s Top Extras on their OSHC policy, or AHM’s Extras — you’ll likely have an annual limit for pharmacy or non-PBS vaccines that can be applied.

Bottom line: If you’re on a basic policy and want a cheap flu shot, head straight to a university health service or a low-cost pharmacy and pay out-of-pocket. If you’ve got extras, check your annual limit and claim right away.

Where to Get a Flu Shot and What You’ll Pay

University Health Services (Free or Bulk-Billed)

Most large universities offer free or heavily subsidised flu shots to students. On-campus clinics frequently run vaccination drives in April and May.

Pharmacies can’t directly bill OSHC for the vaccine cost. You pay upfront and claim back if you have extras. Reimbursement usually takes 2–5 business days once your claim is lodged.

COVID-19 booster at the pharmacy — Free. Tell the pharmacist you want the flu and COVID jab together (one in each arm). No Medicare card needed; just your passport or student ID.

GP Clinics (Bulk-Billing and Mixed-Billing)

Many bulk-billing GP clinics near universities (e.g., MyHealth Medical Centres in Sydney, East Sydney Doctors, Melbourne City Medical) will provide the flu shot with a bulk-billed consult. You’ll still have to pay for the vaccine. Expect to be out of pocket $20–$30 unless the clinic offers a free-government stock program (rare for international students).

What to Do If You Catch the Flu

If you’ve been hit with fever, chills, body aches and a dry cough, don’t just stay in bed and hope it passes — especially during exams.

1. See a GP within 48 hours of symptoms. Your OSHC covers the GP visit. Use the after-hours home visit service (13SICK, DoctorDoctor) if you can’t get out — still covered, often bulk-billed.
2. Ask about antiviral medication. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) works best if started within 48 hours. A GP can prescribe it if you’re at risk of complications. OSHC covers PBS-listed prescriptions; you’ll pay a co-payment (usually $30–$40) and OSHC covers up to $50 per script. Tamiflu costs around $40–$45 on private script in 2026; if you’re prescribed as a PBS item (risk factors), you’ll pay the gap.
3. Hospital cover. Severe flu requiring admission at a public hospital is fully covered by OSHC, including ICU. You won’t face a bill, but make sure you carry your OSHC membership card.

• Book your jab for April–May. That’s your window. Too early and immunity wanes by August; too late and you’re unprotected during peak.
• Don’t skip hand hygiene. Flu lives on surfaces for 24–48 hours. Disinfect your desk at uni, use hand sanitiser after touching library keyboards.
• Wear a mask on public transport in July. This single move cuts your exposure more than any supplement.
• Rest if sick. Trying to push through just spreads the flu to your housemates and classmates. You need a medical certificate anyway to defer an exam — your GP can provide one.
